Headaches

Headaches are a common nuisance in society and can range from mild to disabling. There are three main types of headaches: migraine, tension and cervicogenic.

Common Symptoms

Migraine headaches commonly present with moderate to severe pain characterized by a throbbing or pulsing sensation. Migraines are often associated with nausea, vomiting, and light/sound sensitivity.

Tension-type headaches commonly present as mild to moderate bilateral pain described as dull, bandlike, aching, pressing, squeezing or tightening around the head. Tension type headaches are unrelated to activity and often described as stress headaches.

Cervicogenic headaches commonly present with mild to moderate unilateral pain, felt in one or more areas of the head and/or face. The pain is often accompanied with reduced neck range of motion and painful trigger points in surrounding musculature. These headaches are often aggravated by movement and activity.

What Causes It

The causes of headaches are not always well understood but a family history of headaches, neck stiffness, and stress are common factors. Daily stress is inevitable, whether it comes in the form of relationship issues, work pressure, or other life challenges, our ability to manage stress plays a dominant role in the development of headaches. Add to the mix repetitive daily activities, long hours at work, sitting at desks, bad posture, and poor sleep hygiene and it becomes a recipe for disaster.

How Can Chiro Help

Chiropractors can assess, diagnose, and manage headaches. Current evidence suggests that chiropractic care, like the care offered at Strive, can be effective in treating and managing headaches. A program of care including manipulation and mobilizations, soft tissue therapy, trigger point therapy, electrical stimulation, prescribed exercises and patient education can help to decrease the intensity and frequency of episodes.

At Strive, your chiropractor will work with you to help diagnose the type of headache you are experiencing as well as understand the sources/triggers of your headaches. Based on your specific headache profile, your chiropractor will determine the best plan of care for you and help implement behavioural modifications, stress management strategies and provide therapeutic care to provide relief.

Self-Care Strategies

Manage Stress -stress is known as the silent killer, but better understanding our stress can help the way we perceive it. Incorporation of stress management and education into treatment has been shown to facilitate pain management, prevent transition to chronic and depressive symptoms, minimize disability and improve quality of life. Reframing thoughts to view stress as an acceptable emotion can help reduce many of the negative symptoms associated with it. Remember – the goal is to manage stress, not eliminate it!
