Chiropractic for your Body’s Health – Prehabilitation

What is Prehab?

Traditionally, prehab has been used to prep part of our body like a joint for surgery to support in the recovery process post-surgery. However, the concept of prehab has evolved from a pre-surgical staple to something we have discovered all individuals can benefit from. Prehabilitation is a concept known as preventative rehab and has one simple goal: prevention of injuries.

Instead of being afraid of pain or injuries, at Strive, we want you to understand it. Our bodies are not fragile, and with the right plan it is more than possible to get out of pain, stay out of pain, and rebuild stronger and more resilient. Using strategies and tools from rehabilitation & sports medicine, Dr. Nicole will help teach you how to perform and master these skills on your own to optimize the way you live and experience life.

The concept of prehab is a bit more complicated than simply warming up before a workout. Prehab is designed to help you by empowering you with knowledge. Knowledge that applies to your body, your daily activities, workout routines, and sport and using it to reduce your risk for injury while improving your overall physical health. Prehab focuses on giving individuals the tools to manage aches and pains, restore biomechanics, correct imbalances, enhance movement and improve performance.

There are three components of a prehab program

  • Mobility/stability
  • Muscle activation
  • Strength/conditioning.

Mobility/Stability

This component includes stretching to help improve range of motion as well as exercises that help develop strength throughout an entire range of motion. The goal is increased mobility with greater strength and control through the movement.

Muscle Activation

This component focuses on the communication between the brain and muscles and helps correct muscle imbalances that contribute to pain and loss of motion. When a region of our body is stressed, due to weakness, poor movement patterns, overload, repetition or injury, our brain tells our muscles in that area to “stiffen” or “tighten up” for protection. The problem with this, is often, not all muscles receive the same message – or at all. When only some muscles receive the signal, those areas will work overtime, while other muscles won’t work at all, this can result in imbalance. If this is a problem you are encountering, your Strive healthcare provider will address any weaknesses and/or imbalances and walk you through exercises that target those specific areas.

Strength/Conditioning

This component of prehab is used to develop every area of the body to strengthen muscles, even out muscle imbalance, learn new movement patterns, and enhance coordination. Exercises may include resistance training, core-focused training, and dynamic drills including plyometrics and agility training. There are numerous benefits to strength and conditioning including: increased muscle strength, increased endurance, reduced risk of injury, improved cardiovascular health, improved mental health, improved bone health, improved motor skill, and more confidence to engage in physical activity.

While the exact combination of prehab exercises you do will depend on your daily activities and fitness level there can be a huge benefit from prehab for all people. However, when it comes to prehab and training, working with a healthcare professional is the best way to learn what you need and how to do it right. Together, with your Strive healthcare provider, you will determine what combination of these components will be included in your routine to achieve your goals.
