What Is Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy is a hands-on treatment for the soft tissues in the body, such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These tissues can become stiff for a variety of reasons, and cause pain as well as movement impairments. Massage therapy is an effective way to help address muscle pain and improve mobility by acting on the muscular, neurological, circulatory and lymphatic systems in the body. Massage therapy can also have a relaxing affect and help with stress management.
How Can Massage Therapy Help?
Massage therapy can help people of all ages, and it is an effective way to treat pain and movement dysfunction associated with:
- Musculoskeletal injuries
- Postural dysfunction
- Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after sports or heavy training
- Muscle tightness after surgeries such as orthopedic surgeries, mastectomies, or breast reconstructions
- Lymphedema and swelling in the body
- Neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s
- Pinched nerves and disc herniations
- The physiological effects of stress
- Chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis and diabetes
