What Is A Physiatrist?
Rehab doctors or, Physiatrists are physicians who specialize in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), a medical specialty that evaluates and manages patients whose functional abilities have been affected or impaired.
The impairments may result from injuries or conditions, such as musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis, neuromuscular disorders, etc., or may occur post-surgery. A physiatrist can help to improve a person’s functional capabilities by medical treatment and organizing and integrating a program of rehabilitation therapy that often includes physiotherapy.
Physiatrists usually work closely with rheumatologists, neurologists, and orthopedic/spine surgeons.
Respectively, Physiatrists focus on non-rheumatological muscle, joint, and other musculoskeletal conditions, with the capacity to evaluate any neurological contributions and more complex musculoskeletal conditions.
Physiatrists also focus on rehabilitation aspects (e.g.: optimising function) for those with neurological conditions, such as peripheral nerve injuries (e.g.: carpal tunnel syndrome) and pinched nerves (e.g.: in the neck and low back), particularly those who do not require surgery, and those who would benefit from rehabilitation after surgery.
